What is a good, affordable digital camera for taking action shots?
My son does harescrambles (atv racing in and out of the woods) and I need a digital camera that will take really good actions shots and still shots in both low light and bright light.
There is a problem there that you need to throw money at to resolve.
To catch an action shot you need a camera that captures the image so quickly that the action isn’t over before the camera does its job. Most affordable cameras (point and shoot) just can not do that. You press the button when something exciting is happening and the camera electronics starts but really doesn’t get an image to save until much later (=too late).
However on the more expensive Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) they can all do that. The pricier ones do it faster of course but they all can take reasonable action shots.
You should expect to spend upwards of $200 to get one in that category, probably closer to $500 for a decent action-shot camera (and way upwards from there for a great one). As far as low light/bright light DSLRs cover that too and have built-in brain power that optimizes responding to action shots.
I spent a lot of frustrating time trying to take baseball and soccer shots of family members using a point and shoot before I realized it was not my reaction time – it was the camera’s. Since I got going with a DSLR (Nikon in my case) I can take baseball photos of kids pitching and batting and sliding where they are in midair at the peak of the action. It was all the difference in the world.
